What we need is a new respect for the definition of a poser. I am a poser. I'd "like" to be a computer nerd. I'd "like" to be rich and famous. I'd "like" to be a photographer. I'd "like" to be a designer. I'd "like" to be a movie star/director/documentory producer. Or an author. Or a fashion model. Or an author. Or Harry Potter. Or perhaps a famous chef. Maybe an architect. What about a spy? Or maybe a rock star? International art thief? Producer, Atlantic Records, 1964-1971 (approx.)?

Am I drunk? Maybe. Am I serious? Definitely.

Val and I went to the coast two weekends ago to visit Ocracoke Island. We had been there in January (brrrrrrrr!) for our whirlwind lighthouse tour. It was much nicer to visit in the summer. It is kind of a tourist destination, but it is also only accessible by boat or plane, so you have to WANT to get there. I'll put up pictures soon, but right now I'm so far behind with my photo stuff that I haven't even got the pictures off the camera(s) yet.

Emily and Rachel have come and gone. They're diving back to NYC right now. We went to Durham and Chapel Hill yesterday, and played a lot of Trivial Pursuit (Ancient Genus Edition) that we got at the Salvation army for $1.99.

On friday we went to Big Ed's for breakfast and then did a little thrifting before I had to go to work in the afternoon. I didn't find much, except Val found me a Bartending Guidebook published by my good friend Old Mr. Boston. It contains such treats as Gin and Milk and Gin and Ice Cream drinks. BLEAAAAAAAAARGH!

It's not the heat, it's the...no, actually, it is the heat. The humidity here has been high all summer, but that brings the powerful thunderstorms through frequently, destuctive as they may end up being. Lately it has been flooding, not wind or lightning that has been doing the damage. We're kind of on a hill, so, although our basement does get a little wet, the house isn't in any danger of taking on water.

The house has been great this past year, and we're staying put for the next year. Fall of 2004 might find us moving to Chapel Hill/Carrboro, where Val will be attending the second half of her schooling extravaganza. Carrboro is where all the commies and hippies and THOSE kind of people live, so I think that might be where we end up. In the midst of all the anti-french hysteria, Carrboro declared April "French Trade Month" and encouraged citizens to support brie, not bombs.

We have now FIVE cats at our house, 3 perma-cats and 2 tempo-cats. Buddy the foster cat almost had a home, but things didn't work out for him. Our other foster cat Christie had some issues at her previous foster home, so we took her on too. The perma-cats aren't thrilled with this situation, but they're adjusting.

Val's college roommate Emily is coming to visit this weekend with her girlfriend Rachel. They've been camping in the Asheville area and are swinging through the Triangle on their way back up to NYC. We love visitors (hint, hint...). Fall is gorgeous here and about 6 months longer than it is in the midwest (what we call "Fall" in the midwest is what they call "Winter" here, so I'm not even really exaggerating about that 6 month long thing.).

More updates as news warrants.

August, well, here we are. One year in North Carolina. From the drought and August heat to the longest fall I've ever enjoyed to ice storms to Big Ed's breakfast to tornados in February to the earliest spring I've ever experienced to the dampest summer I've ever had and back again to the August heat. I'm looking very forward to fall when I'll only have 2 out of my 3 jobs and I can relax a little and enjoy the cooling period.

Val and I are going to the coast in the middle of the month for a long weekend getaway. We're staying at a b&b on Ocracoke Island, "home" to Blackbeard the pirate, among others. Arrrrrrrrrrr, arrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Val and I went to see "Pirates of the Carribean", which turned out to be quite enjoyable, despite being a Disney picture. I think it had to do with Johnny Depp, but it was quite good over all.

Other than that, I have a new cell phone (same number), a new digital camera (Canon G3), and I'm shopping for a canoe (used, ideally). I'll be sure to take some pictures of me making calls from the middle of a lake if this all comes together.
